Avenue A Books is launching its first series of graphic novels in early 2019! This new line of books is specifically created to help kids develop social and emotional competencies in a way that speaks directly to them, and to enable them to gain a deeper understanding of relevant and relatable situations.

Why Graphic Novels?

Once considered literary outsiders, graphic novels—at their essence, novels in comic-book form—are no longer relegated to a small yet passionate cult following. They have been welcomed into classrooms and school libraries alike, not only as an acceptable form of literature, but as an engaging, intriguing medium for powerful storytelling that kids and adults are attracted to.

One of the most compelling things about graphic novels is that they appeal to both avid and reluctant readers. Their imaginative storylines, along with the flexibility of the format, supports rich and multilayered plots for advanced readers, while at the same time remaining inviting and exciting for kids who may struggle with, or dislike, reading.

The use of images along with words in graphic novels provides an entertaining and dynamic reading experience, and can be an extremely effective way of communicating complex ideas and situations. For example, pictures can convey information that’s not directly mentioned in the text. This can be a great teaching tool to help kids understand different forms of communication. In addition, the words themselves can be enhanced with different styles, colors, and embellishments to convey tone, volume, and more. This provides another opportunity for kids to explore how information can be expressed visually.

The language in many graphic novels can be more challenging than the level of difficulty might first indicate, which enables young readers to stretch their minds and improve their vocabulary skills. In this way, graphic novels can help kids develop the reading aptitude they need to advance to more demanding books.

Because of their broad appeal and multifaceted format, graphic novels open the door to a storytelling universe in which any child can find their place. They allow kids to experience how much fun reading can be—and can spark a passion for books that will last a lifetime. Want to learn more?

1 thought on “Why Graphic Novels?”

  1. I love the idea! Kids of all elementary ages love to read books like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, which to me is written similar to what you are suggesting. I think it will appeal to many students. If written well, students can learn great SEL strategies and enjoy reading the book.
    Thank you!
