Avenue A Books Managing Editor Sera Rivers, and Marketing Manager Karen Frasca, introduce Avenue A Books to conference attendees.

We had the pleasure of officially launching Avenue A Books at the Responsive Classroom Teachers and Leadership Conferences in Minneapolis earlier this month, and it created quite a buzz!

Authors Rebecca Roan and Sarah Jamila Stevenson, and Illustrator Ian Moore

Conference attendees lined up at our booth to learn all about the newest imprint from Center for Responsive Schools. They signed up for the Avenue A Books newsletter and collected swag to share with colleagues back at their schools. Best of all, they got to chat with authors Rebecca Roan and Sarah Jamila Stevenson and illustrator Ian Moore, who shared insights into their writing and illustrating processes as they handed out Sneak Peek booklets of our upcoming titles.

The theme for the conferences was Hope, and it couldn’t have been more appropriate for the official launch of Avenue A Books. Centered around social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies, these engaging graphic novels show how practicing behaviors such as responsibility, cooperation, and empathy helps kids navigate all kinds of complicated and emotional situations in a healthy and hopeful way. They are great stories that are fun for kids to read, and they also act as excellent SEL tools for teachers and administrators.

In keeping with the Hope theme, keynote speaker Angie Thomas, author of the New York Times bestseller The Hate U Give, gave an inspiring and uplifting talk about how education saved her life. She made us laugh, cry, and cheer as she shared her journey to becoming the celebrated author she is today, and discussed the pivotal role two of her teachers played in her life.

Angie Thomas, bestselling author of “The Hate U Give”, delivers the keynote address at the 2018 Responsive Classroom Teachers Conference.

Angie’s message of empowering youth through books really resonated with the Avenue A Books team and conference attendees. Our mission–to provide engaging, colorful, and relevant books that illustrate real-world challenges and experiences for kids–feels more meaningful than ever, and we’re so excited to bring you our first titles in early 2019!
